Dubai has announced wide-ranging road closures and traffic restrictions ahead of its New Year’s Eve celebrations as authorities prepare for one of the busiest and most high-profile nights of the year, with massive crowds expected across the city, particularly in Downtown Dubai and around the Burj Khalifa.

Officials confirmed that phased road closures will begin as early as the afternoon on December 31

With key routes including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Burj Khalifa Street, Al Mustaqbal Street, Lower and Upper Financial Centre Road and several surrounding streets gradually shutting as crowd numbers increase throughout the evening. As celebrations approach midnight, further restrictions will be introduced, including partial closures on Sheikh Zayed Road near Downtown Dubai, to help manage traffic flow, maintain safety and ensure access for emergency services.

Motorists are being urged to plan journeys well in advance, arrive early if attending celebrations, and avoid driving into central areas unless absolutely necessary

As access will become increasingly limited once closures are enforced. Authorities are strongly encouraging residents and visitors to rely on public transport, with the Dubai Metro set to operate non-stop for extended hours, supported by additional tram, bus and taxi services to meet demand.

Enhanced traffic management measures

Including smart signage, live traffic updates and dedicated diversion routes, will be in place across the city, while a large police, security and emergency response presence will be deployed to manage crowds and ensure public safety.

“Parking restrictions will also apply in and around major celebration zones, and officials have warned that delays are likely even on alternative routes, making careful planning essential for anyone travelling on New Year’s Eve”.
