BMW is preparing an upgraded version of its flagship electric luxury sedan, the BMW i7. This time, the biggest improvement comes from the battery system. BMW partnered with Rimac Technology to develop the new BMW i7 electric battery packs.
The partnership focuses on creating a high-voltage battery system that improves range, efficiency, and charging speed. At the same time, BMW continues to strengthen its electric vehicle lineup while maintaining the premium performance expected from the brand.
Sixth-Generation BMW Battery Technology
BMW equips the new BMW i7 electric battery packs with its Gen6 eDrive technology. This system introduces cylindrical lithium-ion cells instead of the prismatic cells used in the previous generation.
These cells provide higher energy density. BMW engineers estimate an improvement of about 20% compared with the previous battery generation. As a result, the electric sedan can achieve greater efficiency and potentially longer driving range.
BMW engineers also combine the sixth-generation cells with the structural layout used in the fifth-generation battery modules. This strategy improves performance while allowing flexibility for future upgrades.
Faster Charging and Better Efficiency
The new BMW i7 electric battery packs also improve charging performance. The redesigned battery architecture supports higher charging power. Consequently, drivers can recharge the battery in less time.
BMW also aims to extend the driving range of the electric sedan. Although the company has not released official numbers yet, engineers expect noticeable efficiency gains.
These improvements matter especially in the luxury electric segment. Buyers expect long range, fast charging, and effortless performance.
Rimac Produces the Battery Systems
Rimac Technology manufactures the BMW i7 electric battery packs at its advanced Rimac Campus facility in Croatia. This center focuses on developing and producing electric vehicle technologies.
After production, Rimac ships the battery packs to BMW’s factory in Dingolfing, Germany. This facility produces the BMW 7 Series lineup, including the fully electric BMW i7.
The collaboration also highlights Rimac’s growing influence in the electric vehicle sector. The Croatian company continues to expand partnerships with major global automakers.

A Key Step in BMW’s Electric Strategy
The development of BMW i7 electric battery packs supports BMW’s long-term electrification plan. The company plans to introduce a new generation of electric technology through the Neue Klasse platform.
BMW will introduce many of these innovations in future models. However, the company also plans to integrate several technologies into existing vehicles such as the BMW i7.
This strategy allows BMW to improve its electric lineup gradually while continuing to refine performance and efficiency.

A Global Reveal May Follow Soon
BMW may unveil the updated BMW i7 equipped with the new battery system at major international auto events. Auto China 2026 could become one of the first venues where the company presents the upgraded electric sedan.
If BMW confirms the reveal, the improved i7 could mark an important step for the brand’s luxury electric segment.
The introduction of the new BMW i7 electric battery packs shows how partnerships between automakers and specialized technology companies continue to accelerate electric vehicle development.
