Porsche is not going to invest in a new generation of combustion-engine Boxsters and Caymans, nor will we see a new generation of Macans that run on gas. This indicates certain people are prepared to bid goodbye to three of their best-selling gas vehicles.
Although the outgoing combustion models didn’t sell in large quantities, there must be some anxious suits in Stuttgart wondering if converting them into electric sports cars was the right decision. The all-electric Boxster will be unveiled before the end of 2024.
It’s too late to make amends
Porsche terminated the 718 and Macan combustion models in Europe instead of updating them to comply with new cybersecurity regulations. The 718 models will also cease to exist in other countries in 2025, and the ICE Macan will be discontinued in 2026. While it would be fantastic if Porsche decided to reconsider and rework the new electric 718s to accommodate a flat-six, similar to how Fiat altered its 500e to accommodate a combustion engine

Outside of the EU, the mid-engine models will continue to exist, but only temporarily. Albrecht Reimold, Porsche’s production manager, announced this week that the final Gas-powered Boxster and Cayman will be put together in the middle of 2025. The GSR2 laws that eliminated the Macan in Europe have caused it to remain for a little while longer in other areas. According to Reimold, the crossover won’t stop being made until 2026.
