General Motors (GM) has announced a leadership change for its Africa and Middle East operations as the company continues its push to lead in personal autonomous technologies and digital services offered through its trusted global vehicle brands.

Effective March 1, 2026, Jorge Plata—currently Vice President of Sales

Service and Marketing for GM Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean—will assume the role of President and Managing Director of GM AMEO.

Plata will replace Jack Uppal, who will transition to become President and Managing Director of GM Canada after three years heading GM AMEO.

According to Michael MacPhee, GM President for EMEA and ANZ

Plata has successfully guided GM’s strategy in Mexico to maintain the company’s leadership in one of the world’s most dynamic markets.

“Jorge brings a strong record of customer focus, brand stewardship, and partnership-building, enabling GM to compete effectively against established competitors and emerging players,” MacPhee noted.

“As GM approaches its 100-year milestone in the Middle East and Africa, we remain committed to strengthening our relationships with customers, partners and governments as we shape the company’s path for the next century in the region.”

Plata commented:

“This is an exciting moment to lead GM’s AMEO operations. We offer a world-class lineup of connected vehicles and are at the forefront of introducing new technologies in the region, such as the hands-free, eyes-on Super Cruise.”

He added:

“I look forward to collaborating with our dealers, partners, and GM’s talented team to define the future of mobility in the region. The bold ambitions and fast-evolving environment in the Middle East and Africa energize me, and GM sees tremendous opportunities and a promising future here.”

MacPhee also expressed gratitude to Uppal for his leadership and wished him success in his upcoming role

“Jack not only delivered steady growth, but also built strong relationships throughout the region and advanced strategies that expanded customer choice in technology, pricing, and propulsion systems,” MacPhee said. “He also led the turnaround of GM Egypt, bringing Chevrolet back to market leadership.”

Uppal added:

“Leading GM Africa & Middle East over the past three years has been deeply rewarding. Together, we delivered vehicles that customers love, supported by an exceptionally talented team. With his extensive experience, Jorge is well positioned to maintain this momentum and guide the region to continued success.”
